Am I required to take Driver Ed?
Yes – Individuals who have never held a non-commercial, Class C, driver’s license are required to complete an MVA-certified Driver Education course in order to obtain a driver’s license. This rule applies to all Maryland residents, regardless of age.
What if I am 25 years of age or older?
You still need to complete a Maryland MVA approved driver education course. You still need a supervising driver or coach to help you practice. BUT…you only need 14 hours of supervised practice with a minimum of three practice hours at night. And you only need to wait 45 days before being allowed to take the skills test and receive a driver’s license, if you do not receive any moving violation citations or PBJ (probation before judgment). If you receive a moving violation citation or a PBJ, you will be required to hold the learner’s instructional permit for 9 months before being allowed to take the test to become a fully licensed driver. |
Do I need a learner’s permit to take the Driver Ed class?
You do not need a learner’s permit to start the class – in fact, you can begin the class as early as age 15. Many students find that taking the class first helps them to pass the MVA learner’s permit test later when they apply for a permit. (You can apply for a learner’s permit at the age of 15 and 9 months.)
The course consists of two parts: a classroom portion, and behind-the-wheel portion. Students may take the classroom portion without a learner’s permit, and then return for the on-the-road training after they have obtained their permit. |
How long is the class?
Depending on your choice whether weekdays or weekends The classroom portion of the course runs for 2 weeks from Monday through Friday(a total of 10 class days) and 5 weekends (5 Saturdays and Sundays, total of 10 class days) . Each class day is 3 hours long plus a 15-minute break.
There are also 3 Behind-the-wheel (BTW) lessons of 2 hours each (a total of 6 in-car hours). Students who currently hold a valid permit, have completed all 30 hours of classroom instruction and have logged 5+ hours with a parent/mentor/coach can schedule BTW Appointments on the website. Each appointment is 2 hours and student may schedule 3 appointments on different days. please contact the office if you have questions or need assistance . |

What happens if I miss a day of class, or if I can’t attend a day?
No problem! You can arrange to make up the day that you missed during a later class. Please be advised that students may not miss more than 4 days of class, however.
MVA policy requires that all students attend the first day of class, so please keep in mind that you cannot miss the first day. |
